She is a protester who was kidnapped in Karaj by repressive forces during the nationwide protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. After a week of physical and psychological torture including repeated sexual assaults at the hands of the forces of the Islamic Republic, she was taken to the Imam Ali Hospital in Karaj on October 18th, 2022. Before her parents can get to the hospital, she was kidnapped again by the security forces and transferred to an unknown location.
In the hospital, after the initial examination by doctors, clinical evidence including internal bleeding, symptoms of multiple anal rapes, and vaginal rupture were observed and recorded. But the forces accompanying her insisted that it be written in the medical certificate that the rapes occurred before Abbasis's arrest. The Chief of Justice of Alborz province denied the rape report of Abbasi, but CNN has confirmed the rape of Abbasi in prison in an investigative report. After the concern of the citizens, Alborz Chief Justice confirmed her arrest and announced that she was sent to the hospital due to intestinal problems, and after twenty-four hours, she was sent to Fardis prison again. She was arrested because two of the detainees identified her as an instigator and participant in the protests. According to some verified research, the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran uses sexual assault and rape as one of the means of repression to pressure, frustrate, extort and obtain the right to remain silent from the victimized protestors.
To protest unjust detention and torture by the regime, Armita Abbasi along with Elham Modaresi, Hamideh Zerai, and 12 other Iranian women are on hunger strike in a prison in Karaj. Their lives are in danger.
We call upon the human rights community to focus efforts on their immediate release.
